My favorite editor for binary files used to be TECO. The version I have runs on PDP-11 UNIXs but may well run on VAX's using emulation mode. It is great for editing binary files of any length and contents. I often use it to change strings in binary copies of programs. I believe many versions of EMACS for the VAX also work acceptably for editing binary files.

After I got over puking at the idea of editing binary files, I decided to let people know that the CCA emacs for 4.2 BSD will handle binary files fine. You can insert 8-bit bytes by using "Quoted Meta Insert". God knows why you would want to, though. -- {allegra,seismo}!vax135!timeinc\ cmcl2!rocky2!cubsvax>!phri!roy (Roy Smith) ihnp4!timeinc/ The opinions expressed herein are mine, and do not necessarily reflect the views of The Public Health Research Institute.
