[net.emacs] Gosling's screen algorithm..

oz@yetti.UUCP (Ozan Yigit) (07/05/85)

For those interested in the screen algorithm as implemented
in Gosling's Emacs, see:

SIGPLAN notices, vol. 16, number 6, June 1981,
Proceedings of the ACM SIGPLAN symposium on Text
	Manipulation, Portland, Oregon.

Gosling's paper contains an extensive discussion of
the cost matrix technique for optimal screen refresh,
which should be of interest to all text editor implementors.
Algorithms are presented in a pascal-like pseudo-code, and
should not be difficult to convert to C to retrofit into
many existing editors, if the editor does not already
	use a similar technique.
