Mapping search to ^\ and quote to ^] could cause problems for people who run EMACS on personal computers. In most micro communications packages the user must assign one character to enable him to end the terminal emulation mode of the program ("close the connection" in Kermit terms). I know most of the Kermit's I have see come with the ESCAPE character mapped to ^\ or ^] just because they are not mapped in EMACS. Are there any other character that EMACS don't map? SaS

You can always play around with bindings not used very often. When I first ran into the problem (with a Gosling emacs on 4.1), I bound search keys to esc-s and esc-r (for consistency) and quote-character to cntrl-t, losing the regular expression searches and rebinding transpose-characters to the unused esc-t. When I really need to use a regular expression in a search, I do it with either esc-x or with grep in a compilation window. I admit I'm amazed at the number of people using cntrl-\ and cntrl-[, but I guess it's all a matter of individual tastes. "When you are about to die, a wombat is better than no company at all."
