[net.emacs] How can we obtain GNUEmacs source?

rbp@investor.UUCP (Bob Peirce) (07/10/85)

We are a new site and have been following the GNUEmacs
discussion for several weeks. The one thing we have
not seen is how source distribution is handled. Any
help would be appreciated.

We don't know the size of the source, but understand
it is several Mb. This makes long distance uucp
expensive. We can handle 8in. SSSD floppy. (We also
have cpmutl7). We have 1/4in. cartridge tape on our
Altos 68000 but may not be able to read your tar. We
would be happy to experiment. There is also a possi-
bility of reading standard computer tape on a local
Vax, but we are not certain of this.

Please let us know what our options are.

Thank you,
Bob Peirce

Please post that info to the net. I am looking for GNUmacs for
the HS-20 (Masscomp).

If you are going to post a request 'how am I going to obtain
GNUemacs' please include roughly where you are geographically
located. I am sure many sites, noticing you are up or down
the block, will offer to let you drop by and fill up a tape
(B.U. will.)

then again, if you were in Boston you would have walked over to 545,
sigh.

Abject appologies to net.emacs (na). I just assumed everybody's
software prints the organization data like mine does and would
show I am in Pittspurgh, PA. Observe, I have added a signature
block to reduce future problems.

At any rate, Barry Shein's follow-up suggests there is no formal method
of distributing GNU Emacs and I must find someone who is willing to give
it to me. Therefore, to repeat, I run Sys III on an Altos M68000 based
machine (The old one, not the new 3068.) which has a quarter inch cartridge
tape drive and an 8 in floppy. Tape transfer is not likely to be possible
with a different box, but I am willing to experiment. The floppy can
handle several formats, the safest is probably standard IBM sssd. I also
run cpmutl7 in this format. Depending on where you are and the size of
the source, which I am told is quite large, I can also poll you on a
uucp connection or use cu on a guest login. If anybody is willing to
help, please contact me.
