[net.emacs] slow response to char input in Unipress Emacs 2.02

john@sol1.UUCP (john) (10/09/85)

We are running Unipress Emacs version 2.02 on a Plexus P60 under UNIX
SYSIII.
The problem is that when typing characters, emacs can't keep up with
what's being typed. The characters display in a jerky manner on the
screen as if the system were overloaded. (This has been reproduced
repeatedly with my being the only one on the system).

For instance when typing the sentence...

Now is the time for all good men to come to the aid of their party/country.

Emacs displays it as....

no<PAUSE><PAUSE>w is <PAUSE><PAUSE><PAUSE> the <PAUSE><PAUSE>ti<PAUSE><PAUSE>
me fo<PAUSE><PAUSE>

This has happened on the last few versions of Unipress Emacs we've had.
This makes Emacs less than desirable to use.

We are using the hard-coded vt100 driver and tvi970 terminals in the vt100
mode.

If anyone has experienced this problem or knows something about it,
PLEASE let us know. Unipress has heard of it happening but doesn't seem
to know why...

[ that this is all confusion ]

That sounds like it is going through the full-blown redisplay,
rather than the `1 line optimized' redisplay. If you have the same
file displayed in two windows, and have `quick-redisplay' off, this
will happen; otherwise it should not happen for `typical' input
(not including, e.g., wrapped lines).
