[net.music] LONG SINGLE SURVEY

jcjeff@ihlpg.UUCP (jeffreys) (03/24/85)

< Aren't micro-grooves wonderful ! >

I have just gladly given some money to the "millions of suffering people in
Africa and the United States". Yes, I purchased the 7" AND 12" versions of
"We Are The World".

To my amazement, I found that the 7" version is 6:22 minutes long, I find
this quite incredible, only a few years ago, you were lucky to get a 4 minute
song onto a 7" single.

[ I am well aware of the fact that the depth of the grooves governs the output
volume of the record and the width of the groove is governed by the volume of
the song. Thus, a quiet song with with little output capability (shallow
groove), could have the grooves closer together than a loud song which has a
higher output capability (deeper groove).
It is more normal though, that no matter how long the song, that they all use
the maximum amount of vinyl. After all the closer together the grooves, the
more chance there is for the stylus to jump. ]

Any way, this posting is not about the technical merits of record grooves,
but as,

 a) I have just got rid of the last poll about the most valuable record, and
 b) my amazement at the length of the fore-mentioned single,

I thought I would take up yet another poll.

I would like to find 7" singles that have long running time.

I would like you to follow these few rules though:

1. Answers must be by mail to me. PATH ..ihnp4!ihlpg!jcjeff
I will not accept answers to the net, it only clutters up the net anyway.
2. It must be a single, not an EP.
3. It must also be 7" in diameter
4. The records' normal running speed must be 45rpm on the side that you inform
me of. ( I have some 7" singles that plays 33rpm, and one that is 33rpm on
one side and 45rpm on the other ! )
5. I am not looking for replies that say that the record is *about* minutes
long. Most records these days, have a running time on the label. If you
want to enter a title, that has not got a runtime on the label, you could
always play the record and time the duration of it :-)
6. There is NO entrance fee :-)

Have fun and get your votes in, I will summarize in a few weeks, or as soon as
the replies stop coming in.

Beatles' single "Hey Jude" was about 7 minutes long in 1968.
