[net.emacs] A Warning and a Plea

ncx@cheviot.uucp (Lindsay F. Marshall) (01/28/86)

WARNING - In 17.36, if you wish to change the objectionable '~' and '#'
backup and checkpoint indicatores BEWARE. If you wish to make them longer
(such as .BAK or .CKP) you MUST disable the utterly hideous version numbering
stuff or else you cannot create files as there is a pattern somewhere that
assumes a '~' character when looking for versions.

PLEA - Please can future version sof Emacs cater for the following things :

	1) Ease of local tailoring - every time I get a new version I have
to spend ages changing things like ~ and # or the modes for various
types of files. Let's have all this stuff in a single place and
	   make life easy!!

	2) Can some of the rubbish that is building up please be made optional.
Nobody here uses dired, abbrev or many of the other things that
you have to have built in. As a result emacs is huge and runs
very slowly. SO please more modularity in the lisp!!

QUESTION - it seems to me that if rms stopped mucking about with emacs,
he could have written the GNU system 15 times over. After all emacs is
an order of magnitude more complex than UN*X, so why is'nt he doing it?????
I think we ought to know!!!!
