Subject: Freezing windows

Is there a way to "lock" a window in GNU Emacs? I would like to
reserve a couple small windows at the bottom of the screen for *shell*
and *compilation* and force things like rmail, mail-other-window and
delete-window (vis-a-vis window size changes) to leave them alone.

Thanks,
