[net.emacs] GNU Emacs 17.55 via uucp from osu-eddie

karl@osu-eddie.UUCP (Karl Kleinpaste) (03/23/86)

The staff at osu-eddie is making the latest officially released GNU
Emacs available via uucp as we have in the past. With RMS' release of
17.55, a fresh copy of the distribution has been placed in a
uucp-readable directory here on osu-eddie.

_H_o_w _t_o _r_e_a_c_h _o_s_u_-_e_d_d_i_e
An L.sys or Systems file line suitable for osu-eddie.
osu-eddie Any ACU 1200 1-614-422-7709 "" \r\c in:--in: gnumacs word: gnumacs

Modify as appropriate for your site, of course. This is a
time-restricted login, that is, osu-eddie will not allow logging in
via this name outside the time period 10pm-7am, in order to keep our
(still) lone dialin available for primarily local access. When (if?)
we get a second dialin line, this restriction will probably be
removed. We're working on scaring up the $$$ to get 2400 baud
modems, too.

_W_h_e_r_e _t_h_e _f_i_l_e_s _a_r_e
GNU Emacs exists on osu-eddie for distribution purposes in compressed
tar form, exactly what you find on host prep in edist.tar-17.55.Z.
For the sake of uucp sanity, it is cut into 12 parts, as the set of
files /usr/spool/uucppublic/gnumacs.dist/Part-[a-l]. The first 11
parts are all exactly 200,000 bytes long, followed by the trailing
12th which is 153,386 bytes long. The separation helps to keep long
distance uucp sane, so that if it fails midway through a conversation,
you need restart only with the part that failed, rather than the whole
beast.

_W_h_a_t _t_o _d_o _w_i_t_h _i_t _a_l_l
Pick a night when you can afford to be at the office late.  {:-)}

Arrange to have the files uucp'd to your site. Copying the complete
set will take on the order of 5 hours. Your mileage will definitely
vary, by as much as 25% on either side of that estimate.

After the files have all showed up, you should put them back together
in a single file again with cat(1), as in
	cat Part-? > edist.tar-17.55.Z
Then you should uncompress the resulting file, and run `tar xf <file>'
to extract the complete distribution. Voila`, you have GNU Emacs,
ready to build and cause you both joy and pain for the rest of your
life.

_I_f _y_o_u _d_o_n_'_t _h_a_v_e _c_o_m_p_r_e_s_s
We have the source to compress lying around here as the file
/usr/spool/uucppublic/compress.shar. It's about 79K long.

_I_f _y_o_u _r_e_m_e_m_b_e_r _n_o_t_h_i_n_g _e_l_s_e
This file of instructions exists as the file
/usr/spool/uucppublic/gnumacs.ins on osu-eddie.

_I_f _y_o_u _h_a_v_e _p_r_o_b_l_e_m_s _g_e_t_t_i_n_g _u_u_c_p _t_o _w_o_r_k
Someone invariably does have problems. Feel free to write me some
mail; I'll be happy to help as much as I can, though that is
frequently limited by distance. We had some trouble getting used to
the vagaries of HDB uucp's Permissions file, among other things, but
these hurdles have been overcome as far as we know.

Cheers,
