[net.emacs] another version of VMS GNU Emacs

sasaki@harvard.HARVARD.EDU (04/22/86)

From: sasaki@harvard.HARVARD.EDU (Marty Sasaki)

This is the latest version from Mukesh Prasad. It doesn't have any of
the fixes that Joe Kelsey put in, and doesn't use make. I will
probably add these things over the weekend and should have a new
version available this weekend/early next week. Joe is also working on
updating VMS Emacs to 17.61. Expect this soon also.

Major changes in this version include:

o	provision's to suspend emacs and to later resume it.
o	provisions to use XON/XOFF flow control.
o	Emacs now properly echos things in the echo area.
o	no need to link with vaxcrtl.exe. The link.com file checks to
see if you have vaxcrtl.exe and then does the proper type of
	link.

With all of the upcoming revisions, I would suggest waiting if you
can. But for all those who can't wait, the files are available via
anonymous FTP from Harvard. The files are backup savesets:

	~ftp/vms/gnuemacs/gnuemacs.bck	restores [gnuemacs]
	~ftp/vms/gnuemacs/etc.bck	restures [gnuemacs.etc]
	~ftp/vms/gnuemacs/src.bck	restores [gnuemacs.src]*.c,*.h
	~ftp/vms/gnuemacs/obj.bck	restores [gnuemacs.src]*.obj
	~ftp/vms/gnuemacs/info.bck	restores [gnuemacs.info]
	~ftp/vms/gnuemacs/lisp.bck	restores [gnuemacs.lisp]*.el
	~ftp/vms/gnuemacs/elc.bck	restores [gnuemacs.lisp]*.elc

You will still need the convert program which is also available from
Harvard in ~ftp/vms/gnuemacs/convert.c. If you don't have a C
compiler, use the convert.exe provided.

Copy the files over, remember to use binary mode. Then run the files
through the convert program. If you had any previous versions of VMS
Emacs, then don't bother to copy elc.bck, just copy bytecompile the
stuff in lisp.bck. If you have a C compiler, then don't bother with
obj.bck.

The next version that I distribute shouldn't need the convert program.

Cheers!
