[net.emacs] Gosling-Emacs style backup files names in GNU Emacs?

wje@lewey.UUCP (Bill Earl) (05/09/86)

Does anyone have diffs for a change to GNU Emacs to provide
Gosling-Emacs style names for backup files. That is, I would like
the backup for "x.c" to be ".#x.c", not "x.c~", and the recovery
file for "x.c" to be ".##x.c", not "#x.c". I prefer this, since
it makes the backups invisible in a regular ls listing. I have
usually arranged to automatically remove such files when they are
old enough with a crontab entry (for those users who wish to have
that service).
