This may have nothing to do with your problem, but... One thing that changed in 4.3 is the bhavior of telnetd, which now does the RET -> LF mapping unless told not to by user telnet. If you are getting to your machine through telnet, emacs shell sessions will not get RETs. We use Bridge concentrators here and the user telnet which runs on them does not accept user commands; to use emacs through them on 4.3 machines we have re-mapped the necessary commands to trigger on LF (the loss of the distinguishable RET is an irritant alsoo in normal editing, where we can't use RET for newline distinguished from LF for newline-and-indent). -- scott preece gould/csd - urbana uucp: ihnp4!uiucdcs!ccvaxa!preece arpa: preece@gswd-vms
