I will be in grad school next fall and will be forced to use VMS. Worse yet, the department is geophysics, hence has no C compiler, only FORTRASH!! I don't know if I can bear it, and I don't know if they can afford a C compiler. Any information on compilers and cost would be appreciated. If you want a real UNIX C compiler, look at a decent UNIX emulator; avoid VNX and VAX-11 C like the plague!!! For a start, it doesn't handle Upper-lower case distinctions across source files. One example (this is a plug) is UNITY/VMS from HCR, with which I happen to be associated. The compiler and linker are from BSD 4.1, with an additional system V compiler in the works (we are waiting for Release 2). There are educational discounts and small demonstration licenses at low cost available. Chris Retterath, UNITY/VMS Product Manager, Human Computing Resources Corp. 10 St Mary's Street, Toronto.

Isn't Decus still distributing Decus C? The tape I received some time ago had the source for VMS. -- ====================================================================== signed: Rod Hart (wa3mez) Chesapeake & Potomac Tel. Co. The DECUS C Compiler (11-SP-18) is really a PDP-11 C compiler that runs on the VAX in compatibility mode. There is no support whatsoever from DEC for this compiler. The DECUS Structured Languages SIG is the focus for bug reports on this compiler. It is distributed in source form, and the user is expected to be able to support it himself. If this is sufficient for the original application, then that's just fine. I believe the charge for the magtape from DECUS is about $160. I use this compiler all the time on my RT-11 system and I think it's just great! VAX-11 C, however, is a native-mode compiler which is sold and supported by DEC. I believe the binary license fee for that compiler is in the neighborhood of $6000. --Bob Hoffman, Pitt CS
