Greetings!

It's time to meet again. It has been 2 months since our last
meeting and since that time I've had numerous calls from people new to our
LUG. Apparently word is getting around and this is to everyone's
advantage. Pass the word about these meetings. Who knows, maybe you'll make
a contact with someone here at the LUG meeting that may be able to help you
out of a tough spot someday because they either have similiar equipment or
run similiar software. Advertising pays!
Since our last meeting DECUS has had their semi-annual symposium.
This time it was held in Cincinnatti with an attendance of over 4500. I'll
be discussing some of the things I saw/heard/did while I was there for a
week. We will also have Norm Keifer from EMULEX present to give a short
(1/2 hr.) presentation on communications devices, ie; differences between
DH-11's, DZ-11's, DMF-32's, etc. This is intended to be a talk of a general
nature for technical and non-technical audiences.
As of the time of this writing DEC plans to have a person from the
local office come to the meeting to give a short presentation on their
newly announced product Rdb. This is a relational database system that
(currently) runs on VAX's under VMS.
One last piece of business I'd like to bring up at the meeting is
the topic of special interest groups. I've had numerous calls from folks
who would like to start "birds of a feather" groups. These groups would
meet on their own, in addition to our LUG meeting, to discuss topics of a
common nature. For example, I've had numerous inquiries from people
interested in starting a group which would be for those who have personal
computers (made by DEC, of course). This would include Rainbows, Decmates,
and probably Pro's. There has also been interest in starting groups with
PDP-11's, Vax's, and groups with different hardware, but running the same
operating system. I will do my best to start these groups where there is
any interest at all. As a result of this I am enclosing a survey which I
hope you will either bring with you to the meeting or return to me by mail.
This will help to determine who has comparable systems and who has an
interest in forming a group.
I haven't received any new DECUS tapes, yet, but this may have
changed by time you get this letter. Check with me at the meeting. Once
again, I only have the capability/time to copy 800 or 1600 bpi tapes. If
you need to get any other type of media, I'll help you find someone in the
LUG who can do the copying for you.
Now for the bad news. I messed up by not reserving the auditorium
here at Tektronix early enough in advance, so we only have the area
reserved from 12:00 to 1:30. I guess we'll just have to make do with that.
