*** REPLACE THIS LINE WITH YOUR MESSAGE *** Is anyone out there using Software Tools under VMS? Any interest in a newsgroup for net.stug? It seems worthy to me, but I'm not sure if there would be enough traffic. Would anyone subscribe? I've had a serious problem with the shell under VMS 4. We can't get it to do anything in the background. When given a command that ends with '&', the current shell spawns a shell to run the command successfully, and that shell is properly running with DETACH priv (the shell is installed with DETACH and CMECEX priv as per instructions) but this shell seems completely unable to spawn anything. The command echo foobar >fuzz ?flooey & will not even get as far as creating fuzz or flooey -- and the broadcast message will come back that the command terminated successfully. Anyone run into this? Are we missing something in how the shell needs to be installed under VMS 4? Any help would be appreciated. Please send replies uucp-mail if possible -- I may not be able to get mail from this site. -Thanks, Jim Rosenberg {decvax!idis, allegra}!pitt!amanuen!jr

Would anyone subscribe? > Yes, I would be very interested in a net.stug, and am surprised that there is no such group on usenet. Perhaps someone can forward this new newsgroup request to the appropriate group (net.news?). I am interested in anyone attempting to get the "Toys" (yacc, lex, lisp) STUG tape up and running - what were the experiences, etc. Maybe this discussion can go to a group where more people would read it? A net.stug would be very appropriate, considering that the latest STUG newsletter announced the demise of "official" support for progress on standardizing the toolset. Yes, I would certainly subscribe to a STUG tools newsgroup. As an aside: I've finally had some success in bringing up yacc and lex from the toys tape, but I haven't used them much. There were at least two problems I encountered in lex - (i) the routine "esc" seems not to have been supplied and is NOT compatible with the standard one in the library (it is fairly simple to create a new "esc" by looking to see what the code expects); (ii) there were some non-standard character escape sequences ("@^a") which caused "negative character class" error messages. More details on request. I'm looking for: a) a ratfor version of "make" b) someone who can tell me why the shared library versions of the tools (using RLIBSHARE.EXE) run 2x slower than the non-shared versions.
