From: sutter (Bob Sutterfield) A user in a department served by our VAX-11/750 under VMS v4.1 is about to purchase a Xerox printer. He will eventually be getting the new 4045, but until that arrives, he will be using a 2700. It will be on a DMA serial port (on a Xyplex cluster, if you must know), as a spooled output device at 19200 baud. He will eventually want to have some VAX-resident fonts for downloading for special occasions, besides a few cartridge-resident for speed and flexibility. The first major use will be as a printer to be shared among many users on DEC Rainbows and IBM PC's that all use locally-attached printers, and want to be able to share one nice big print engine. Eventually, we will probably install TeX, move the 2700, and install it on a parallel (DMF-32) interface as the VAX system printer. What must I do about the print symbiont to get it to talk nicely to this? If users are using local word-processing packages on their PC's, and I can get their print file onto the VAX and into the queue, how should I coerce the symbiont to ship out exactly the binary file that's referred to in the queue? Is there a special symbiont that I need that knows how to download the appropriate fonts for a particular print job or page? How about changing from portrait to landscape for 132-wide DP-style jobs? Answers to the above, and any other words of wisdom or warning would be greatly appreciated. -- Human: Bob Sutterfield Facilities Management Division The Ohio State University Instruction & Research Computer Center Workplace: Ohio Cooperative Extension Service, Computer Management Group OCES VAX System Manager/Programmer (VMS) Mail: ...cbosgd!osu-eddie!sutter.UUCP or: sutter@ohio-state.CSNET MaBell: (614) 422 - 9034
