[net.decus] ramdisk on an 11/750?

btb@ncoast.UUCP (Brad Banko) (10/30/86)

I don't know if this makes any sense, but we have an 11/750 with 7 meg, and
it is just too slow for certain image processing tasks... is there any way
to create a "ramdisk" with memory under VMS? and does anybody have any
ideas about how this might effect performance? We wouldn't use it very often,
but when we did, we would want optimal performance for that user...
(by the way, we are using the gipsy image processing software if anybody out
there has ever heard of it..) Thanks,
(the rationale for a ramdisk, rather than a program doing everything in memory
is because gipsy is a series of programs that you "apply" to an image file...
which means multiple sequential file accesses... => faster with a ramdisk (?))

check the latest issues of hardcopy, dec pro, and the
vax sig newsletter.... VMS has this ability which was added to allow
booting off of tk50's... there have been about 5 articles lately in the
above publications on exactly how to turn it on...

VMS ships with a RAMdisk. My notes are not handy but it uses PDDRIVER and
a macro program included in the STABACKIT
