In response to my proposal (ubc-vision.256) to create the newsgroups can.ai and can.ai.cscsi I received 14 mail responses. They were all positive with a few minor quibbles. The two tier scheme is awkward but probably necessary. One person misunderstood the purpose of can.ai.cscsi as being for the society's executive only. If that were the case then I agree that mail would be better. The purpose of that group is to allow the members to communicate with each other about matters relevant to the society. At last count there were 280 members but we don't know (yet) how many have access to Usenet. Others liked the separation so they could get general material without the society-specific stuff. Two people pointed out that the overlap between can.ai and net.ai may be a problem. Some machine downstream from us is not forwarding net.ai so I don't know how much traffic it gets. I think the best thing to do is just to go ahead and create the newsgroups since there is sufficient interest. Look for can.ai and can.ai.cscsi appearing shortly at your neighbourhood Unix site. I urge you to contribute to the discussions in those groups; we are a small community spread over a large country. Think of this as an experiment in decentralised electronic democracy.
