Late last winter, I posted a request for comments on whether the DECUS UNIX SIG (of which I am formally the Chairman) should continue to exist. The prerequisite was that somebody volunteer to act as Chairman. I received only half-a-dozen responses, the most positive of which included the sentence: If there is interest in setting up a Canadian UNIX Users group I would be interested enough to assist in its activities. The DECUS Canada Library Committee has just sent out a letter asking whether we want to receive the Canadian Symposium tapes for distribution to our members (These don't include UNIX), and to contribute to future ones. If the DECUS UNIX SIG is to perform any function, the construction and distribution of such tapes should presumably be one of its major functions. So we arrive at a choice point. Either somebody takes over the SIG and organizes it into a useful body, or else I simply submit my resignation to the DECUS Board and recommend that the SIG be disbanded, since the interests of its potential members are being met in other ways. Please could I have comments and recommendations. (Take into account the interests of sites without access to the net, if you can). The most important recommendation is the name of a person willing to act as Chairman (should of course be submitted with the knowledge of the Candidate). If there are serious candidates -- who should be DECUS members -- we might even go so far as to ask DECUS to conduct an election. -- Martin Taylor {allegra,linus,ihnp4,uw-beaver,floyd,ubc-vision}!utzoo!dciem!mmt
