There are several efforts going on in this direction: CDNNET/EAN at UBC (Gerry Neufeld), MLNET at UWO (me) and a variety of more local operations. Anyone want a newsgroup to discuss developments in this area. Trouble is, of course, half the people interested aren't on Usenet.

Let's keep it in can.general for now. Are there any gatways from these message systems to uucp? Any prospects of a gateway from Envoy 100 to uucp? Dave Sherman Toronto -- {allegra,cornell,decvax,ihnp4,linus,utzoo}!utcsrgv!dave

Sounds good. I certainly would like to see some discusion about other message system besides UUCP. As Julian mentioned we have been working on a message system based on the new CCITT protocols for messaging (the X.400 series). It also uses the ISO session and transport (class 0) protocols. To interconnect systems we have developed X.25 protocol package for Unix 4.2. Actually the system can also transport messages over a phone line using a modified version of CSNETs mmdf link protocol (the mods were to permit 8bit data over ITI (X.29) links). It certainly is MUCH better to use a direct datapac 3000 service to interconnect however, both in speed and expense. Rental of a 2400 baud line is $190 a month ($390 for 9600). The packet charges vary but its about 1.50 per kilo packet from vancouver to toronto (packet size is 256 characters). Gerry deepthot???

The ccitt message system we are working on here (the system is called EAN) as a gateway to CSNET/ARPA and to UUCP. This simply means that anyone running the EAN system has access to and from CSNET/ARPA and UUCP via the UBC gateway. The gateway provides protocol conversion between ccitt message transfer and user agent protocol and arpa 822/821. The mailbox addressing scheme we adopted is the same as ARPA. This makes sending messages into and from ARPA etc. straight forward for the user. Gerry
