[can.general] canadian networking

julian@deepthot.UUCP (Julian Davies) (02/21/84)

Well, I had several replies expressing interest in discussing
networking etc on the net. "can..network(s)" was suggested, but
there is so little traffic on this newsgroup so let's use it for
now.
some people are intersted in mail networks, some in conferencing
systems, some in datapac applications, and there are various other
topics and combinations thereof.

My own project is building "MLNET" which is supposed to provide much
the same kind of mail forwarding capability as EDUCOM's "MAILNET".
That is, we will forward mail messages between a variety of different
systems, including UUCP systems and non-unix systems. Right now we
have DECsystem-10s and VAX-VMSs and UUCP connected at UWO, Ont.
X.25 is supposed to be used for non-UUCP off-campus links. I hope to
connect more non-unix sites in the near future. Guelph will be
connected as soon as they have their own 'hub' operating. toronto and
waterloo seem to be pretty much UUCP-connected.

I also hope to run Gerry Neufeld's software for CDNNET, with a gateway
function; that will connect various computers which get that software
and X.25/datapac connections.

I even want to run the JNT Mail protocols to provide a gateway to the
large UK&Europe set of sites running JNT mail. But the datapac
overseas links are expensive to run. Some administrative controls
will have to be put on the gateway with arrangements for charge-back.

OK, who else is doing what in this area?
BTW, we are putting up the X.25 package from York University UK.
When it IS running, we'll let you know how it shapes up. It is a
package developed for Unix/X.25 in the UK under SERC auspices
(equivalent to NSERC here), so is not too expensive for canadian
universities. it uses a falcon front-end to handle the HDLC level.

My favourite mail address is ...!uwo!julian.
but you can get to me at deepthot!julian.
Shortly, we will encourage domain-based UUCP mailers to recognise the
domain ".MLNET" and send mail for it to "uwo" which is the gateway.
You could send mail to "uwo" for other UWO machines, if you know
someone else here at Western.
