[can.general] Onyx Unix Machine possibly for sale Cheap

bstempleton@watmath.UUCP (Brad Templeton) (05/05/84)

I currently own an Onyx C8002 Unix box with a 10 meg hard disk and 256K
ram. But the disk is broken right now. However, AABEX/Electrohome, the
factory service reps, are fixing it under warranty. They want to send it back
to Onyx in San Jose for repair and this could take a month or more.

I am doing URGENT work and I can't take the delay. If possible, I'll sell
my machine (with delivery & payment in ~ 1 month) and buy something else
to use right away. Possibly even a newer onyx that works.

For those not familiar the Onyx was the first Unix box and is still one
of the best. It uses a Z8000. The disk is a FAST voice coil winchester with
an average seek time of about 30 ms and a maximum of 50 ms. To compare,
an IBM XT or other Seagate type is average 90 ms and maximum of about 300 ms!

These things retail quite high, about $18,000, so they are not easy to
expand, but the current configuration, though small for an Onyx, can blow
the doors off most of the 68000 based systems. And the unix is real
System III with vi, csh and that stuff added. I may want to keep my unix
licence, but you can buy another one from the distributor for about $1500
and possibly less. We can work it out.

Anyway, call or mail me SOON and make me an offer. You would be surprised
how low I will go. 519-884-7473 or 886-7304. We're talking less than $6000,
possibly significantly less. And fresh from complete overhaul.
