[can.general] national electronic messaging system

A report titled "A Strategy for a National Electronic Messaging System
for Research in Canada" has been prepared by Paul Gilmore and Gerald
Neufeld. It provides an overview of electronic messaging systems, a
survey of existing messaging systems in Canada, and a strategy for
creating a national messaging system available to all members of the
research community of Canada.

The report focuses on CDNNET, a fledgling messaging network of machines
at Canadian universities and colleges. CDNNET presently comprises test
sites at Camosun and Cariboo Colleges in British Columbia and at these
universities: British Columbia, Simon Fraser, Manitoba, Waterloo,
Carleton, and Montreal. Sites at Alberta, Calgary, and Western Ontario
should soon be operational. Gateways are operational on CDNNET for
CSNET and UUCP mail, and CDNNET is being used to distribute the Usenet
news.

The messaging software used by CDNNET is called EAN. EAN's design is
based on the ISO open systems architecture and the draft CCITT X.400
message handling protocols. The EAN software currently runs on VAX
computers using the VMS or Unix 4.2bsd operating systems, on Sun
workstations using Sun's version 1.0 of Unix, and on Amdahl's UTS
operating system. EAN uses Datapac X.25, Datapac X.29, TCP/IP, Decnet,
and telephone connections; support for other networks can be added as
the need arises. Version 1 of EAN is planned to be available in
November, 1984.

The latest version of the strategy report is dated April 19, 1984. If
you would like a copy, please send me your postal address. Feel free to
pass this note along to others who may be interested.
