The following item appeared on the Sharp Network: no. 2298760 filed 19.35.28 wed 21 nov 1984 The CRTC, as of Monday this week, told BCTel to cease and desist their practice of allowing toll-free access to the DATAPAC nodes in BC. The reason given was 'unfair competition'. So, as of now, anyone calling the DATAPAC nodes via 112-....... will be charged. This certainly seems strange to me. I thought that BCTel had a monopoly in that fair province.

Does anyone have more details about toll-free access to Datapac
in B.C.? I didn't know it existed. I have seen the numbers for
Vancouver, Victoria, etc., and I know Datapac nodes exist in
the larger B.C. centres, just as they do in Ontario (there are
30 or more dialup nodes in Ontario - I don't have the list handy).
Was there much demand for use outside the major B.C. centres?
Any word on whether Datapac toll-free access has been considered
in other provinces? (I believe there is a U.S.-wide Telenet number,
by the way.)
