For those of you out there who would like to understand the income tax system a little better, as April approaches... The Law Society of Upper Canada's course on Basic Income Tax Law, a course taught by CAI, is available on-line from our system. Cost is $12/hour (20c/minute), which includes Datapac charges if you're not in the Toronto calling area. This course is used as preliminary instruction in the Bar Admission Course. It's completely up to date (including last week's budget). Although the course is entirely self-contained, those who take it may also leave questions on the material on-line. Questions are replied to by the course author and the replies are left for the next time the student signs on. (If you want really detailed tax advice, that's something else entirely; I'm also available as a consultant, but that's not the subject of this posting.) The entire course takes 10-20 hours, but people who aren't interested in corporate tax or certain other topics would probably find it useful to take about 1-2 hours' worth, specifically Lesson 1 (Introduction) and Lesson 2 (Personal Tax). I can send a flyer out to anyone who wants more detailed information. If you would like to take the course, or part of it, send me an e-mail message with your physical address and state that you agree to pay the Law Society for use of your account at the rate of $12/hour. (I really should ask for a physical signature, but I'll trust most netreaders.) We'll send you a login/password and access instructions by physical mail. No charge for the login itself, which is good for three months.
