"The Pas, Man. (CP) - An inquiry into the stabbing death of a young
Indian woman has been onesided, a native women's group says. ... The
first three days of the probe into Helen Betty Osborne's death focused
on the testimony by RCMP of their efforts to crack the Nov. 13, 1971
murder. It took 16 years to bring the case to trial. Dwayne Archie
Johnston was convicted in 1987 of second-degree murder and sentenced to
life in prison. ... "We are appalled I guess...because the mandate of
the inquiry is to find out the aboriginal people's perspective,"
Courchene said in an interview. ... The body of the Cree student, who
was stabbed 56 times with a screwdriver, was found nude in the snow
near the shore of a frozen lake."
