I think the best I can say about the GST is that I'm simply aghast. For those without an Oxford on their desk: aghast: terrified; struck with amazement It certainly points out how politicians are only interested in being elected during a election campaign and will say anything. They certainly don't pay any attention to their promises after they get elected. Can you say "revenue neutral" Mr. Wilson, sure you can. I'm reminded of Opus's (Bloom County) dieting attempts last year. He kept trying strange and wonderful diets while Milo kept suggesting "Eat less, excercise more." Our politicians must also be reminded of the obvious. Increased taxation causes inflation and makes Canada less productive on the world market. The government must spend less and be more efficent in providing services. As much as I can't stand Mr. Vander Zalm, the socreds have done a reasonably good job of reducing the BC deficit without raising taxes. They reduced services and cut back on civil servants. It was painful period but BC is benefiting now. Mr. Wilson wants to add 4000 civil servants to collect this new tax. And close to 1 million business's across Canada will have to devote time and energy to collecting it. Talk about increased efficency :-) This tax is absurd in it's present form Mr. Wilson, "Eat less, exercise more." -- Stuart.Lynne@wimsey.bc.ca uunet!van-bc!sl 604-937-7532(voice) 604-939-4768(fax)

Do you realize that the Tories have broken every non-trivial election promise except for one? They said they'd implement Free Trade, and have done so. They've broken every other promise. In record time, too. >This tax is absurd in it's present form Mr. Wilson, It's a disaster. I see a tax revolt on the horizon. You would think the Tories would have paid attention after the trouncing they got in the west in the last election. No, I'm dreaming. Western Canada is not part of Metro Toronto, and is thus a priori irrelevant to federal politicians. ...laura

Of course, one would not have expected the current opposition to do much better if they'd got in. A friend of mine observed, uncharitably but probably correctly, that the Liberals and the NDP could probably have beaten Free Trade if they'd cared enough to coordinate their campaigns and avoid splitting the anti-Conservative vote. -- V7 /bin/mail source: 554 lines.| Henry Spencer at U of Toronto Zoology 1989 X.400 specs: 2200+ pages. | uunet!attcan!utzoo!henry henry@zoo.toronto.edu

Just think how bad things would be if all the promises (which of course consist of spending our money) of the last 10 years had actually been kept!!A A years had been kept.
