[can.general] French postings revisited

webber@utstat.uucp (Bob Webber) (09/28/89)

You know, some of those postings in French are just as dumb as most of the
ones in English, but some are just as well thought out, too. Too bad there
aren't more technical postings: I'd like to learn some technical/Unix French...

Those of you opposed to learning the language because it won't be useful to
you should think about the French telephone company's project to put a
terminal in every home. We don't here much about technological advances in
France, but they are no slouches in any subfield of applied science.

I for one am quite comfortable with French and English posting in the language
with which they best express themselves. Frankly, I've found the ongoing
bilingual discussion fascinating, though I've had little to contribute so far.
It's one of the reasons I like Usenet.

This is off topic, but Canada has had its stabs at similar projects.
Remember Telidon? More recently, Bell Canada has started a project
called Alix in Montreal to test the reception to such a scheme yet
again.

Neither is Germany, Sweden, Switzerland, Israel, or any of those cute
little countries on the Pacific Rim. If my goal was understanding the
advances of applied technology in the language of its creators, after
English I'd probably be learning Japanese.
