The first meeting of the Toronto Unix User Group is to take place Tuesday, September 11 at 7:00 pm, in the Burgundy Room of the North York Memorial Community Hall. The group, which has been in the formative stages for a number of months, is intended to serve as a forum for Unix users of all degrees of experience as well as the merely curious. Guest speaker at the inaugural meeting is Trevor John Thompson, Vice President of Strategic Planning for Mortice Kern Systems in Kitchener. He will speak on the similarities and differences between Unix, MS--DOS and OS/2. No memberships or fees are required to attend this meeting. Along with giving Unix users the opportunity to meet each other, the group is designed to help users learn more about Unix. A number of Special Interest Groups (SIGs), each with its own leader, will deal with particular elements of Unix: SIG LEADER Communications Richard Greenall, Digital Equipment Corp Databases Lou Ferrante, Sequent Computer Systems New Users Ted Cowie, TVC Enterprises Programming D'Arcy Cain, D'Arcy Cain Consulting Text/Word Processing Evan Leibovitch, Sound Software Unix Tools Peter Renzland, Ontario Ministry of Health Graphics/Windows SIG John Dorn, GraphOn Also planned is an extensive software library, which will offer users access to the extensive archives of useful Unix free software. Unlike freely distributed software offered for microcomputers, the programs offered for Unix come with complete source code, and authors rarely ask for contributions. The user group's software library will be maintained by Rick McCalla of Comspec Computers, Georg Nikodyn of SCO Canada, and Drew Sullivan of Systems Software. The user group, which has tentatively been named Torix, will be affiliated with Uniforum Canada, the national association of Unix vendors and users. We are also listed as a Local User Group by Usenix. The North York Memorial Community Hall is located on the bottom floor of the North York Main Library building, located next to North York City Hall at the corner of Yonge Street and Park Home Avenue. It is a short indoor walk from the North York Centre station of the Toronto subway.
