[net.rec] net.rec.frisbee non-frisbee disc query

finn@pur-ee.UUCP (06/25/83)

I have to agree with Alan, that Wham-O discs (particularly the
World Class frisbees) are still among the best. However, he did
forget to mention HDX discs, considered for years to be among the
best and most durable. Personally, i prefer the Discraft discs.
The Sky-styler is beautiful for freestyling and the Ultra-star is
at least as good (maybe better) as the World Class 165g for ultimate.
I also had the first Sky-styler out here three to four years ago,
and everyone loved it. Just thought i would put in my two-cents
worth and at least mention HDX's.
If anyone has anything more on the afore-mentioned "puppies", please
let me know. For distance, and golf, my favorite disc is a new golf
disc that (i think) comes only in *pink* glow in the dark, rather than
the usual light green. It is a new mold (forgot which) that is
designed for distance (small and heavy). Could this be what Alan
refered to as a "puppie" (never heard it before)?

Good point, I did forget the HDX, but only because I abandoned them years
ago. They tend to shatter at about 42 degrees F, but are fine above or
below that. Stiff, too.

AMF Voit has several discs available, it turns out. The "translucent non-
gouge" top piece model is 175G for about $7-$8. There's a smaller conventional
model called the "Vector" which is a remodeled Floater (I guess they used to
manufacture that one), 170G for about $6. They have a K-9 model that is made
of HARD plastic so the pooch won't mangle it badly, about $4.

There's even a "generic" disc out now, about 165G for next to nothing (<$4).

As for the puppy, it's a 21 cm diameter disc weighing in at 150-200G and
costing around $7-$8. Available mail order only, I think. I can't say
enough good things about its putting characteristics, and I've seen some
awesome drives.

Discraft is coming out with the Sky-Streak, a heavy plastic disc for golf.
It's in beta-test right now.
Voit also has a golf offering, a puppy replica, which alone makes it worth
looking at. Two sizes: 21cm and 23cm @ about 185G and $8.

I still use a heavy (glow-in-the-dark) Wham-o model PGA golf disc. It serves
well, but then I am not a serious golfist. Wham-o has a whole line of
heavy golf discs.

Most of these discs are available from mail order houses like the following:
		Disc Wares Unlimited, Inc.
		PO Box 333
		Amherst, MA 01004
There's always somebody selling discs at tournaments, too.

Whew! Got carried away again!
