[net.rec] A rebuttal to complaints about ABC

keithe@teklabs.UUCP (Keith Ericson) (08/07/84)

ABC is charged with the task of providing ALL the video for ALL the
countries' video feeds. (This means that they have cameras *everywhere*
running *all the time*.) Each and every foreign producer is then free to
select whatever portion of it he wishes to present to his audience. It
is, indeed, the producer for the American portion that should be the
receiving this collective criticism. Don't go thinking that what you
are watching is the same programming that everyone else in the world is
watching. (Talk about chauvanistiv attitides!)

And, if you think you can do a better job, then give it a try...

(and, no, I'm NOT affiliated with ABC or anyone/anything close to
them... Except I 'spose Tek sells them T&M and TV equipment.)

Your are right right that we arren't seeing the same thing that you are
seeing but we still aren't seeing much besides the US atheletes. During
the women's team gymnastics competition, we saw little of the other
teams - only when there no US women performing, we saw some of the
Romanian performances but very few. Our CBC announcer seemed rather
unsure of when the picture was going to switch to another camera. I
have noticed them cut off a performance just as the announcer leads up
to some move an athelete is expected to make. CBC radio had a fifteen
to twenty minute segment on Friday evening discussing the poor coverage.

I thought CBC covered our '76 Olympics quite well(I think we did do
a better job). If they have as much control over the broadcast as
you say, I can't see why they are fooling things up this time.

PS I don't think you know any better than the anyone else from the
states what we get to see, so I don't think you should
make assumptions any more than the others should. (It happens
that the others are correct, though).
