/* I'm reposting this message in net.rec. It was origonally posted in net.ham-radio, but it has been decided that net.rec is more appropriate for our discussions -- scott */ It's been decided that this group is most appropriate for use in discussion of radio controlled modeling. (planes, boats, cars, helicopters, etc) I think it would be nice if we could get our cast of characters established initially. Later, we can move on to kit/engine/radio reviews, flying experiences, club activities, etc. To get the ball rolling, here's a profile of myself. I've tried to include things I thought I'd be interested in learning about other people in the hobby. Name: Scott Wiesner Home: Boulder, Colorado Age: 22 Years in RC: A tougher one to answer. During junior high, I was a member of the Mid Missouri RC Association. I flew for about a year and a half, but when my family moved, I never got involved in the local activity. Having just recently graduated from college, I thought I'd get back into the hobby to fill up my spare time. I spent a month deciding what to get, a month building, and soloed at the end of August during my 8th flight. I guess it's like riding a bike. My instructer never had to take the transmitter away from me. Current equiptment: At the moment, I'm still flying the plane I re-learned on. I've got a Futaba FG7-K FM radio, Great Planes Trainer 40, with a K&B .40. I'm working on a Windfree sailplane, a New Era 40, and have a Cap 21 in the closet for a winter project. Flying field description: We (the Boulder Aeromodeling Society) have 2 paved runways, 30x350 (NS) and 30x300(EW). Prevailing winds are out of the South. -- Scott Wiesner {allegra, ucbvax, cornell}!nbires!scott

Scott, glad to see that you found your way to net.rec, maybe some more will show up before long. I started R/C in 1967, my son was in high school. We decided that if he would build a plane, I would build the R/C system. We started with a Heathkit GD-47 system and still have it. It has the old bonner sticks. Compared to the modern day system, it is a drag, but was our pride and joy at that time. Our plane was a Goldberg Senior Falcon at that time, and my son still has one. I fiddle with helicopters mostly, but still fly fixed wing once in a while so as not to get out of practice. I have not purchased any of the new radio systems, although I am giving it serious thought. I currently fly my machines using a Royal Electronics system on 53.1 as I have a ham license (W9LXP) and am about the only guy in the club that does. I have been shot down a couple of times by the National Guard, they use the six meter band also. We have two blacktop runways also, N-S and NE/SW since that is where most of the winds are in our locality. Our site is on an old land fill. We are on our sixth year there, so have things fixed up quite nice. We are going to put in a R/C track in the spring, we think it will help the local kids get out of the parking lots and streets and there are also guys in our club interested in it, although I am not sure that I will get into it. I guess that is it for now, I am burned out and am going to bed for some ZZZZZs. Talk to you later. Al Irwin 1312 W. Hill St. Champaign, Il 61821
