Sussex University  is a  centre for research  and teaching  in AI
with  a  wide  range   of  inter-disciplinary  research  projects
including speech,  vision, natural  language, expert  systems and
program development environments.  Computing facilities include a
network of Sun workstations, VAXes  and a GEC-63. There is also a
new  campus-based AI  company, Cognitive  Applications. Positions
are  available  on Alvey  and  ESPRIT  projects including  POPLOG
development.


AI and related Research Posts
-----------------------------
1. Vision Research Fellow (2 years)
To  work  with  Dr  David Hogg  on  knowledge-based  segmentation
techniques for  remotely sensed  images using  POPLOG on  a Sun-3
Colour workstation.  The project is  part of an  Alvey consortium
led  by  Systems  Designers  in collaboration  with  the  Natural
Environment Research Council.

2. Logic Programming Environments Research Fellow (2 years)
To work with Dr Allan Ramsay  on a collaborative Alvey project to
design  an  advanced  programming   environment  to  support  the
development of Prolog programs.

3. Site Manager
Experienced UNIX programmer to help manage a network of computers
and workstations used for AI research and development.


POPLOG posts
------------
POPLOG is a  machine-independent software development environment
including  incremental compilers  for POP-11,  Prolog and  Common
Lisp, and a powerful screen editor.

1. POPLOG project manager (3 years initially)
A challenging  post managing  a design  and development  team, in
close collaboration  with Professor Sloman and  AI researchers at
Sussex University.

2. PROLOG system programmer (2 years initially)
To work  on the Prolog  subsystem of Poplog,  including improving
performance of  the compiler, integration with  the screen editor
and other Prolog development aids.

3. POPLOG system programmer for ESPRIT workstation project
    (2 years)
An experienced  system programmer  interested in  compiler design
and microcode, to work on an ESPRIT project involving an advanced
high performance multi-language workstation supporting POPLOG.

All posts  start as soon  as possible. Research  appointments and
the  position  of  site  manager   will  be  on  Range  1A  scale
(7250-12150, under review). POPLOG  appointments will be on Range
1A or Range  II (11,205 - 14,925, under review)  depending on age
and experience. The Project Manager may be appointed on Range III
(14,135 - 17,705, under review). A pension scheme is available.

             Artificial Intelligence and System Programming
                               July 1986

The Cognitive Studies Programme is the home of a flourishing AI teaching
and  research  group,  with  a  network  of  SUN-2,SUN-3 and HP 9000/300
workstations and other  equipment.  The  group  is  expanding  fast  and
several  new  jobs  are  currently  available  in AI, system support, or
working on the POPLOG AI development system.

(1) 1 year LECTURESHIP in AI, preferably in natural  language,  but  ALL
    other areas also of interest.  Lecturer Scale.

(2) Unix Site manager: SYSTEMS PROGRAMMER/SYSTEM MANAGER to help  manage
    a  GEC  series  63 and Systime VAX750. (18 months left at present in
    this post but it will almost certainly be  renewed.)   Opportunities
    to  do  AI  programming.  IA  scale  (possibly  IIA  for  the  right
    candidate).

(3) Support programmer: to  help  write  AI  APPLICATIONS  PROGRAMS  for
    teaching and research.  2 year post initially.  IA scale.

(4) SYSTEM PROGRAMMER to manage a network  of  SUN  workstations.   Some
    opportunity to do AI programming as well.  This is a PERMANENT post.
    IA scale.

(5) VISION RESEARCHER for an Alvey project led by Dr.  David  Hogg.   IA
    scale.

(6) RESEARCH FELLOW to work on extension of POPLOG virtual  machine  and
    microcode support on Orion Computer, from January 1987 for 3 years.

(7) Prolog SYSTEM PROGRAMMER to work on Prolog compiler and Prolog tools
    in POPLOG.

(8) POPLOG 'infrastructure' PROGRAMMER - general AI  programming  support
    to  POPLOG  team,  monitoring  of  configuration control procedures,
    organisation of bug reports, and liason with commercial  distributor
    and academic users.

(9) Expected soon: a post on a collaborative Alvey project  on  advanced
    logic  programming  environments,  the  Sussex  portion being led by
    Allan Ramsay.
