NORTH S:J63 H:72 D:AT63 C:Q865 SOUTH S:AKQT98 H:K6 D:7 C:AK72 S W N E 2C -- 2D 2H 2S -- 3S -- 4N -- 5D -- 6S -- -- -- West leads the 9 of clubs. The solution is simple. Contrary to another "solution", east does not need the KQJ of diamonds. As a matter of fact, he cannot possibly have them if the hand is makeable. (6H, 4C, 3D, and 1S is 14 cards. I assume clubs don't break or there's no problem.) All that is necessary is a little card reading. Certainly east has the heart A, or else you're down. West does not have either club honor because of his lead. Either that or the game is too tough. (Rusinow was not given in the conditions.) Win the first club on the board with the queen. Draw three rounds of trump ending on the board, east pitching two hearts. Lead the club 8, 10, K, diamond pitch. Cross back with the diamond A. Lead a club, J, A, diamond. Now get back to the board by leading the >>>>> TWO <<<<< of clubs to the five to lead a heart through the ace. That's right, the two. You must drop the 7 under the queen, or east can prevent you from taking three finesses. To the submitter: is this a Janersteen(sp?) problem?
