[net.rec.bridge] Bidding Question

woods@hao.UUCP (Greg Woods) (09/16/83)

3C=relatively weak suit, 6-8 points, 3D=strong suit, 6-8 points, 3H=
weak suit, 9-10 points, 3S=strong suit, 9-10 points). My partner was dealer,
and opened 2H. With the hand I had, I was envisioning the possiblity of playing
the hand at 3NT, so I was planning to bid 2NT (Ogust) to see if we had the
points or not, figuring on passing a 3C response (which would have definitely
surprised my partner!), putting him in 3H if he bid 3D, and going ahead to
3NT otherwise. Unfortunately, my right-hand opponent threw a monkey wrench
into the works by overcalling 3D. The question is, what the hell do I do now?
I felt this hand was too good to pass, I can't really double with such weak
diamonds when my partner could have practically nothing, and with a diamond
bid on my right, I certainly can't bid 3NT! And I hesitate to introduce a new
suit (clubs, of course) at the 4-level.
   I'd tell you what actually happened, but I don't want to prejudice anyone.
I'll tell you what I did and what the result was in a later posting (it was
quite startling!) In the meantime I'd like to solicit comments from the net.
Mail me or post a response as you see fit.
