Have you ever misbid your way to the perfect contract? We had a hand the other night where one partner didn't know what was going on, the other corrected out of desperation, and the final contract was the top spot. You try it. S H AT7542 D A7 C A8753 You open 1H, partner responds 2C (2 over 1 forcing to game), and RHO doubles. Now what? What is your plan? This hand redoubled. The bidding went as follows: 1H P 2C X XX(1) 2D P 3D 3S(2) P 4S P 5D(3) P 5S P 6C(4) P 6S P 7C(5) P P P 1)He'll find out later what I have, but I better keep him bidding. 2)I need to show all the controls. This is the easiest way. He should not believe it's a suit, at least not after I bid clubs. 3)First round control. Gee, I wish you hadn't made me commit to slam. 4)Clubs is really what I meant by the redouble. 5)CLUBS, stupid. CLUBS!! The other hand had: S KJ73 H 9 D K32 C KQ964 Hearts were 4-2, clubs were 2-1. 7C made, for a clear top. The slam of course is excellent. But what a way to get there.
