wildbill@ucbvax.UUCP (William J. Laubenheimer) (03/29/84)

Event winners at the 27th Spring North American Championships, held 9 March -
18 March in San Antonio, Texas:

Grand National Pairs - 7-8 March
Steve Sion, Wallingford CT - Harold Stengel, Boston MA

Men's Pairs - 9-10 March
Mike Lawrence, Berkeley CA - Peter Weichsel, Miami Beach FL
A ``great'' from the late 60's-early 70's and another from
the mid 70's get together in the 80's.

Women's Pairs - 9-10 March
Judy Tucker - Jacqui Mitchell, New York NY

Men's Board-A-Match Teams - 15-16 March
George Rosenkranz, Mexico City - Eddie Wold, Houston TX -
Jeff Meckstroth, Pickerington OH - Eric Rodwell, W. Lafayette IN -
Marty Bergen, White Plains NY - Larry Cohen, Jamaica Estates NY
A powerful squad, all with international experience.

Open Pairs - 17-18 March
Lou Bluhm, Atlanta GA - Bart Bramley, Avon CT

And now for the biggies...

Vanderbilt Knockout Teams - 11-16 March
Chip Martel, Davis CA - Lew Stansby, Castro Valley CA -
Hugh Ross, Oakland CA - Peter Pender, Guerneville CA
This makes two wins in major team events in the past year
for this team, which became the first team ever to successfully
defend a Grand National Team title in 1983. Clearly one of the
two best American teams currently -- in the last four Team Trial
qualifying events ('83 Grand Nationals, Spingold, and Reisinger,
'84 Vanderbilt), they have won two, and finished 2/3 and 3/4 in
the others. This win means that they will be seeded directly into
the finals of the Trials for the 1985 Bermuda Bowl.

Women's Knockout Teams - 15-19 March
Edith Kemp Freilich, Miami Beach FL - Nancy Gruver, Ellicott City MD -
Mary Jane Farell, Beverly Hills CA - Helen Utegaard, Carmichael CA -
Beverly Rosenberg, Sherman Oaks CA - Carol Pincus, Los Angeles CA
The first three members of this team have been winning things
for ages. The other members are no pushovers either.

Thank you for the posting of results. Hopefully we can have more such
postings of bridge news. There's never anything in the paper.

The results bring up one thought: what do my fellow bridge addicts think
about Steve Sion playing in the ACBL again? For those who aren't aware of
my point, he and his partner at the time, Al Cokin (spelling and first name
may be wrong), were expelled when they were caught cheating a few years
ago. N.B. they had been monitored for a while since there had been suspicions
for many months; the case against them was overwhelming, I understand.
They were conditionally reinstated a year or so ago to save the legal costs
the ACBL was going to incur.

My personal opinion is that their reinstatement was a mistake. There should
be no price on integrity.
