[net.rec.bridge] lead directing double punished

rainbow@ihuxe.UUCP (Rob Buchner) (04/09/84)

I played in a regional swiss team event last weekend. It was the last round
and we were leading the field by ten victory points. We were paired against
the third place team. I expect a tough match. Not so as on the very first
board the opponents say we dont want to win this match and hand us 1950
on a platter. The culprit was an unsound lead directing double which
I decided to send back with a redouble to play. Here is the full deal:

            S:xxx
            H:AKxxxxx
            D:Kx
            C:A
S:Qx S:xxx
H:xxx H:
D:Qxxx D:Jxxxxx
C:xxxx C:KQJx
            S:AKJxx
            H:QJx
            D:A
            C:xxxx

And the bidding proceeds(all vulnerable):
 N E S(me)W
1H P 1NT(1) P
4S(2) P 4NT(3) P
5H dbl(4) rdbl P
P P(5)

1:This shows 5 spades and is forcing for one round. A 1S call is the
equivalent of the forcing NT bid leaving more room(ie opener can now bid
  1NT with a flannery opener, 5 hearts 4 spades)
2:A tough choice of bids to make. Hard to say whats best.
3:Keycard blackwood
4:How can you make a lead directing double when you are going to be on lead?
5:Whats the worst bid in this auction? Probably the last pass. If we have a
two suited fit, they must have a good two suited sack to recover from this
  disaster.

My partner made all 13 tricks. This is called learning lessons the hard way.

If we hadnt clinched the match with that result, the next hand certainly
put the nails in the coffin. My hand is T98765-A63-4-T98. The bidding goes:
 W N E S(me) all vulnerable
2D(1) P 2N(2) P
3D(3) P 3N P
 P P

1:Weak two bid
2:Ogust asking for clarification of openers hand
3:I have a good suit but a minimum number of high card points

My lead. Any suggestions before reading on? I know diamonds are ready to
run or perhaps partner might have a stopper. We need to set up tricks
quickly. Partner could have doubled with solid clubs. In any case
partner needs an awful lot in that suit to set it up. I have too many
little spades to seriously consider trying to set them up. Declarer must
have that suit stopped pretty well unless partner has an awful good holding.
That leaves hearts. Partner doesnt need much to make this a killing lead.
Everything points to partner having quite a few hearts. So I lead a low
heart and hope. 6 tricks later declarer claims. Down 2. 5 diamonds is cold. I
swear the matches seemed to get easier as the rounds progressed and we
kept winning. Here was the full deal:

          S:Q
          H:KQxxxx
          D:xxx
          C:Jxx
S:Jxx S:AKx
H:xx H:JT
D:KQTxxx D:AJx
C:Kx C:AQxxx
          S:T98765
          H:A63
          D:4
          C:T98

Interestingly our partners were in 3NT also. But south led a spade and the
contract rolled home. Yes, we blitzed the final round and won the event
going away. By the way, in the cold slam hand, the opponents played in a
calm 4H contract.

Ignore previous response. Just noticed east would be leading anyway.
