It always seems that the good players are lucky. Maybe they make their own luck. Or maybe they are bad often enough that sometimes things just work out. Judge for yourself. But one thing you can't dispute. Someone is watching out for my welfare. Going into the last round of a regional swiss event this weekend, we were 7-0 and playing for the event. Things went badly as we misdefended a game contract that the opponents shouldn't be in. And it also seemed we could be on the wrong end of a couple double part score swings. Basically it looked like we were going to lose the match. So on the last hand my partner put me in 6NT on this hand figuring a loss is a loss regardless of how many imps we lose by. S:AQx H:Ax D:QJxxx C:Kxx S:Kxxx S:Jxx H:Txx H:Jxxx D:xx D:Axxx C:Qxxx C:Jx S:Txx H:KQxx D:KT C:Axxx I get a diamond lead. East wins the A and continues the suit. I win the KD. Then the KC. Then I run diamonds pitching two spades and a club. I was hoping for some favorable pitches, but received none. Now I ran three hearts and cashed the AC. This leaves: S:AQx S:Kx S:Jx C:Q H:J S:x H:x C:x As you can see, the spade finesse brought in the entire suit. Making six. It was indeed the difference in the match. It could be the most memorable hand I've ever played. And don't tell me I don't have a guardian angel. After this result, I know I do.
