[net.rec.bridge] NAC recap

Congradulations are in order for Bill Laubenheimer(alias wildbill) for
his bridge performance at the fall Nationals this past week in San Diego.
He was a member of the team which finished second in the North American
Swiss Team event. This is a three day, six session event with National
rating. He was out of first by three victory points to Grant Baze. If
they hadn't lost their last match of the event to a non-contending team,
they would have finished first. Nicely done!!!!!

For those interested in other highlights, Baze may have gone over 3000
points for the year with his performance. He also won the flight A swiss.
Crane did not have any major successes, so the race for the McKinney may
be all but over. Rumor has it he is throwing in the towel.

Also, the Reisinger teams had an exciting finish. This is a prestigious
board a match National event used as a qualifier for world competition.
It also is a three day, 6 session event. There was much confusion as
the results were being tabulated. It appeared no one was sure who had won.
No less than six teams claimed to have the same score!!! So the
excitement in the air could be felt as the official results were being
totalled. And then they were final. The top six teams were within
one board of each other. This comes as a result that there was a carryover
at each stage of the event which was a percentage of the score achieved.
This alone is amazing. However, the conditions of contest state that .25
of a board is enough to declare a champion. But would you believe that
still left the top four teams tied? So thats how the event ended. A four
way tie for first. The odds of this happening are beyond estimation.
By the way, the top finisher by .1 of a board were the two time
defending champions. Another amazing accomplishment showing consistancy
in excellent play over long periods of time. I do not believe a National
title has been won three times consecutively before.
