Here are the winners of the Nationally rated events contested at the 1985 Spring North American Championships in Montreal, Quebec between March 8 and March 17: Grand National Pairs - Peter Boyd, Falls Church VA - Steve Robinson, Arlington VA These two are beginning to make a habit of winning Grand National events. This makes two in a row after winning 1984 GNT with Robert Lipsitz and ... Men's Pairs - Ed Manfield, Arlington VA - Kit Woolsey, Arlington VA Another title for this world-class pair. Women's Pairs - Dale Derner, Pittsburgh PA - JoAnne Caplan, Dallas TX Shocked all the big names to win by nearly a board. Does anybody out there know anything about either of these two? Men's Board-A-Match Teams - Hal Mouser, Chicago IL - Dan Rotman, Skokie IL - Ron Gerard, White Plains NY - Josh Parker, New York NY This team lost to Crane (see below) in Vanderbilt round of 32, but rallied to win what I have heard called "the toughest consolation event in bridge". I believe it. Open Pairs - Jim Robison, Los Angeles CA - Joseph Silver, Montreal PQ A couple of solid performers. Robison is probably underrated outside West coast. Vanderbilt Knockout Teams - Eric Rodwell, North Lafayette IN - Jeff Meckstroth, Pickerington OH - Michael Becker, New York NY - Ron Rubin, Livingston NJ - Mike Lawrence, Kensington CA - Peter Weichsel, North Miami Beach FL Barry Crane bites the big one again, losing 198-88 in the finals to enhance his record of futility in the "big" national events - he has yet to win a Vanderbilt, Spingold, Grand National or Reisinger Team, or a Life Master, Grand National, or Blue Ribbon Pairs championship. His teammates were Tom Sanders, Bobby Nail, Dan Morse, John Sutherlin, and Ira Chorush. Lawrence and Weichsel, on the other hand, have now won three NAC titles (1984 Spring Men's Pairs, 1984 Summer LM Pairs, Vanderbilt) in the last four championships. Women's Knockout Teams - Rama Linz - Barbara Hamman - Beth Palmer - Lynn Deas - Kay Schulle - Juanita Skelton Unfortunately, the bulletins never see fit to give the home cities of teams remaining in knockout events, even when there are only a few left. Deas and Palmer, who have been making quite a name for themselves in Women's events recently, and Schulle, the wife of multiple national champion John Mohan, are from the NYC general area. Hamman, whose husband is world champ Bob Hamman, lives in or around Dallas. Skelton is from somewhere arould Los Angeles. I can't place Linz. Netters at the NACs: I only recognized one name, but he turned in a quite creditable performance. Terry West of Glendale CA, who is out there somewhere on the Arpanet, came in seventh in the Grand National Pairs and added a 5/9 in the midweek Open Swiss Teams. Take a bow, Terry. (Sorry I lost your address). Anyone for a USENET net.rec.bridge get-together in Las Vegas?
