The Summer North American Championships of the American Contract Bridge League were held from 2 August to 11 August in Las Vegas. (The Grand National Teams began early, on 31 July, and the Spingold Teams ran through 13 August). 19,827 1/2 tables were in play, making this the largest bridge tournament ever held. Results of the major events: Grand National Teams Flight A: Alfred Sheinwold, Los Angeles CA (NPC) - Chip Martel, Davis CA - Lew Stansby, Castro Valley CA - Hugh Ross, Oakland CA - Peter Pender, Forestville CA The powerful 1985 Bermuda Bowl squad notches its third GNT triumph out of the last four events. Grand National Teams Flight B (0-500 MP): Irving Goodman, Downsview ON - Floyd Dyson - Leo Takefman - Tim McPhail - Louis Richardson, Toronto ON Frequent Usenet net.rec.bridge contributor Robert (ihuxe!rainbow) Buchner finished second in this event, making it to the finals. Master Mixed Teams: Bill Pollack - Rozanne Pollack, Englewood NJ - Alan Truscott - Dorothy Truscott, Bronx NY - Dave Treadwell - Evelyn Levitt, Wilmington DE New York Times bridge columnist Truscott scores up another national title. Truscotts have both competed internationally, and Treadwell is on ACBL Board of Directors. Non-Life Master Swiss Teams: Dorothy Shorts - John Shorts, East Aurora NY - Patricia Rasmus - Richard Rasmus, Hamburg NY North American Men's Swiss Teams: John Devine, Tenafly NJ - Alan Sontag, North Miami FL - Roger Bates - John Mohan, New York NY I don't know anything about Devine, but the other three names are top-flight professionals. North American Women's Swiss Teams: Sue Farino, West Bay Shore NY - Dianna Gordon, Toronto ON - June Deutsch, Chicago IL - Tobi Deutsch, Highland Park IL - Rhoda Walsh, North Miami Beach FL This looks like the same sort of deal. The captain is unknown to me, but Gordon has represented Canada internationally, the Deutsches have been collecting a number of good results in women's events lately, and Walsh is another highly ranked professional. Life Master Pairs: George Steiner, Seattle WA - Darryl Pedersen, Bellevue WA A strong pair from the Pacific northwest. This is Steiner's second, and Pedersen's first, North American championship. Spingold Master Knockout Teams: William Passell, Fort Lauderdale FL - Russ Arnold, Miami FL - Ira Rubin, Paramus NJ - Charles Burger - Tom Mahaffey - Jack Denny It was Rubin vs. Rubin in the finals, as Ron Rubin - Peter Weichsel - Mike Lawrence - Jeff Meckstroth - Eric Rodwell attempted to make it two team titles in a row ('85 Vanderbilt - '85 Spingold) but came up just 12 IMPs short in a match that was close all the way. Passell, Arnold, Rubin, and Burger are all old hands at events like this, but neither Mahaffey nor Denny (to the best of my knowledge) have any significant National results to their credit. Other significant results bu Usenetters: Carol (zehntel!carol) Simon finished 19/21 in the Master Mixed Teams and 6th in the regional Board-A-Match Teams Robert (ihuxe!rainbow) Buchner finished 11/13 in the regional 0-1500 Swiss It was truly a gigantic tournament, and loads of fun. Next major events are the Bermuda Bowl in Sao Paulo (October) and the Fall NACs in Winnipeg (November). I won't be going, but will pass along any news I can get.
