[net.rec.bridge] Results of Fall North American Championships

wildbill@ucbvax.BERKELEY.EDU (William J. Laubenheimer) (11/19/85)

The ACBL's Fall championships were held in Winnipeg, Manitoba, from 1-10
November. Just over 5500 tables were in play for the tournament, making
it the smallest North American Championship in many years. (By way of
comparison, the Summer NACs in Las Vegas drew 19,827 1/2 tables). Winners
of the North American Championship-rated events were:

Mixed Pairs: Steve Robinson, Arlington VA - Beth Palmer, Silver Spring MD
Both players have a long record of successes at the national level
over the past 15 years. Robinson is serving as expert consultant
for a computer bridge program (Cybron II).
Life Master Men's Pairs: Roger Bates - John Mohan, New York NY
Revival of a strong and very successful partnership which was
placed in limbo for a while when Mohan spent some time in California.
Life Master Women's Pairs: Lynn Deas, Schenectady NY - Beth Palmer, Silver
			   Spring MD
The second-place Ladies' pair at the Biarritz (1982) Olympiad adds
a national title to their list of accomplishments. Palmer was not
the only double national winner in Winnipeg, though.
Blue Ribbon Pairs: Eric Rodwell, West Lafayette IN - Walter Johnson, Columbus OH
Rodwell, world champion and many-time internationalist, picked up
this title playing professionally. Johnson became LM with victory.
North American Swiss Teams: Jack Coleman, San Francisco CA - Rhoda Walsh,
Los Angeles CA - Jim Jacoby, Dallas TX -
Gaylor Kasle - Garey Hayden, Tucson AZ
Another professional team; Walsh, Jacoby, Kasle, and Hayden are
all touring pros. Although Coleman has been playing bridge for
a while, he has only recently begun playing in the fast lane,
usually playing with Walsh or Grant Baze.
Reisinger Board-A-Match Teams: Tie between
Chip Martel, Davis CA - Lew Stansby, Castro Valley CA -
Hugh Ross, Oakland CA - Peter Pender, Forestville CA
			       and
George Rosenkranz, Mexico City - Eddie Wold, Houston -
Jeff Meckstroth, Pickerington OH - Eric Rodwell, West
Lafayette IN - Marty Bergen, White Plains NY - Larry
		Cohen, Little Falls NJ
It has been an incredible three months for Martel, Stansby, Ross,
and Pender, who in that time have won the Grand National Teams,
the Bermuda Bowl, and now the Reisinger. About their only mistake
was to lose in first round of Spingold to a team including Stansby's
wife. The other team is also well-seasoned in international play.
Note that this Larry Cohen is not the one involved in cheating
accusations with Richard Katz. A 12-board playoff was conducted to
determine qualification rights to International Team Trials for
1987 Bermuda Bowl. This playoff was won by Rosenkranz, 7-5. If
Martel had won the playoff, they would have received a bye into
	Trials finals.

Other national results:

Rookie Grand National Pairs: Cindy Cummins - Kathy Gostin, Dallas TX
Non-Life Master Pairs: Hank Hristienko - Zbigniew Rodwanski, Winnipeg MB
