One of the best values in the tax preparation field is "Your Federal Income Tax" which is better known as IRS Publication 17. Publication 17 is a very detailed but generally readable guide for individuals (subject to US income taxes) explaining the tax laws, forms, and other pertenent details as to what is income, deductable, etc. Since it is published by the IRS, it contains the IRSs official position on tax matters. The best part is that it is FREE - either pick up a copy at your local IRS office or order it using the blank on the back of your tax return package or the IRSs 800 number. Yes, Publication 17 is useful and it is FREE. One important thing to remember though: it is not legally binding as far as the IRS (or, I believe, the courts). You may find an example in Pub 17 that reads like it was written with you in mind, the people at the IRS may agree, but if that's not the way the law actually interprets it, you're SOL. I know, it happened to me several years ago. One good note, however, if the error is actually in Pub 17, the IRS usually won't hit you with interest/penalties (note the word usually). -- Mark J. Did you know that some companies publish the IRS tax guide,
put a different cover on it, and *sell* it on newsstands?
Look sometime - the guts of the publications are *identical*
to the IRS book. Nothing illegal about this, either.

#(647)# Speaking of Publication #17 - Does anyone out there have a toll free 800 telephone number to call the IRS to get a copy?
