[net.taxes] A CPA view of the Marriage Penalty

sjc@lambda.UUCP (Sandy J. Cifrodelli) (02/14/85)

I have a friend who is a CPA.
He told me that the reason the "marriage penalty"
exists is that the tax tables were created at a time when
most families had one earner.
Since the tax structure has not been changed,
it innately taxes two earners with a higher rate.
Hence,
the government is not out to get you.
Through their
incompetance (by not correcting this situation),
they penalize you.
Knowing the government,
this should not surprise you.
