I have a friend who is a CPA. He told me that the reason the "marriage penalty" exists is that the tax tables were created at a time when most families had one earner. Since the tax structure has not been changed, it innately taxes two earners with a higher rate. Hence, the government is not out to get you. Through their incompetance (by not correcting this situation), they penalize you. Knowing the government, this should not surprise you. Sandy Cifrodelli Bellcore
