[net.taxes] Hypothetical situation

dross@vlnvax.DEC (Doug Ross) (11/04/85)

Consider the following case :

Jim Jones and Jane Doe are engaged to be wed in June of 1986... Jim is still
a college student and makes less than $3000 dollars a year at his part-time
job removing lint from the navels of exotic dancers.... Jane, however, has
been out of school for two years and makes upwards of $25,000 a year as a
mid-level plastics engineer at the McDonalds Food Processing plant in her
hometown... Jim says to Jane, "Hey, Jane, if we were to get married in December
instead of next May, I bet we could get a bif tax break by filing jointly."
Jane says, "Sounds good, Jim... But I'm not sure... Anyways, that's MY

tax break, bud... cause I pay $4000 a year federal tax... Maybe we could
recoup $2000 of that if we were married."

Can anyone help Jim and Jane? Would there be any tax savings for 1985 and
half of 1986 until Jim gets out of school? What about about little Jared?
"Who?!!!", exclaims Jim....

Thanks,
Doug Ross
