From: goddard We here at Rochester CS department have recently become aware that the new tax code will have a significant impact on our (graduate student) stipends. The information I have is that the new tax code will be signed in a few days, that it will be retroactive to August 19th, that stipends will be taxable, and that tuition wavers or portions of stipends used for tuition or fees will be exempt. I wonder how other departments, particularly CS departments, are reacting to this. Is everyone just meekly accepting the reduction in take home pay, or are departments attempting to compensate in some fashion? I would be particularly interested in hearing from people whose departments are contemplating a co-ordinated response. Please e-mail me and I will summarise to the net.
