[net.micro.atari] Result of compiler/hard disk survey

reg@vaxine.UUCP (Rick Genter) (08/11/83)

Well, it has been several weeks since I posted my request regarding
hard disks, C compilers and better DOSs for the 800, and I've received a
whopping 3 replies. Here is the summary:

	HARD DISKS:
It seems that Corvus may have a hard disk which connects to the 800,
however, speed was unknown. If it goes through the standard Atari cable
external to the 800 (not via an interface board inside the box), then it
will be disgustingly slow (that external cable is a 19.2KBaud serial link,
fine for a printer/modem, but not for disk).

	C COMPILERS:
OSS (Optimized System Software) apparently seems to have a pretty
good C compiler. It was also rumored that Aztec C has come out with a
version for the Atari which is Version 7 compatable. APX (The Atari
Program Exchange) has their Deep Blue C, but it is a tiny-C implementation.

	OPERATING SYSTEMS:
OSS (see C compilers above) has their OS/A+ which is similar to the
Atari DOS but with a command processor as opposed to the annoying menu
presented by the Atari DUP. OSS apparently wrote the original Atari Basic
and DOS.

If anyone who didn't reply to my original request has information, or did
but somehow it didn't get to me, please feel free to post your information
or mail to me (reg@vaxine.UUCP).

To those who did reply, thank you for your time.
