I beleive that I asked this question some time ago, but received no response. I'll try again, in case anybody has learned anything since then... For the last several months, a computer dealer in Toronto has been claiming that Atari will soon be coming out with a new modem. It is supposed to connect directly to both the telephone lines, and the peripheral port of an 800 (thus eliminating the need for the 850, which I still don't want to buy at their price). It is also supposed to be switchable 300/1200 baud, with autodial, and possibly auto-answer. The price that I was quoted was "around $400 CDN", which would be a fantastically low price for the described goods. The description the dealer gave me is backed up by pictures in two different brochures of Atari's, displaying hardware soon to be available. (the cover of the modem was different in each brochure) However, the claim that the 850 won't be required wasn't mentioned in the brochures. Furthermore, a third brochure was put out a while ago (about 2 months ago, between the other two) saying that the modem would only have 300 baud. What's going on!?! If anybody out in the net has any more reliable news of atari's new modem, would they please post it? I'm told that it should be available in "about a month", although that's exactly what they told me three months ago. If I find out anything more definite, I'll let you know. Thanks! -Kieran A.
