[net.micro.atari] Atari modem question

gwa@whuxle.UUCP (01/25/84)

I've recently acquired an Atari 800XL for my family (me,spouse,5 yr old son).
I'd like to get a modem (possibly underwritten by my company) to talk to the
unix mini-computer at work. Eventually, I'd like to get a monitor and a printer
for my own use and the company's. At that point I could return the TI 745 of
the company's that I keep at home.
My question is: Does anyone have experience with trying to do what I suggest?
In particular, how does the 37 column limitation of the Atari work when the
mini expects an 80 column format?
Any and all help will be greatly appreciated. I don't want to buy until I know
what the capabilities and limitations are.

I have 4 different terminal programs. The one that I use the most often wiht
unix is The Terminal Emulator from APX. It allows you to use 80 column displays
by pressing shift and START. This causes all of the characters on the rightmost
side of a 80 column display to scroll onto the screen. It also includes the
ability to upload, download and dump the screen to a disk, cassette or printer.
Finally, it emulates an adm3a or vt100.
